Pottery: Arretine ware crater, without handles.
Fine deep red glaze. Above the design, row of beads, wreath, and band of rosettes.
Frieze of six figures to right, representing the Seasons with columns between:
(1) Winter moving to right, wearing close cap, boots, long chiton, and thick chlaena over it; with right hand she drags a boar by one hind leg, and in left she holds a shepherd's crook over her shoulder from which hang a hare behind, and a bird in front. Before her (instead of a column) is a lamp-stand, with moulded and fluted stem and high triangular base, with a circular ornamented top.
(2) Spring, holding in both hands a basket (or fold of her drapery) containing flowers and fruit; she wears a close cap, long chiton slipping off the right shoulder, and himation. Before her is a Tuscan column with a large mask of Pan to right on the top; round the cap is tied a festoon which extends all round the vase, and at the foot of the column is a square wicker basket covered with drapery, in which are bunches of grapes.
(3) Summer moves hastily to right, holding a wreath in right hand, and in left a poppy and ears of corn; her hair is knotted at the back, and she wears long chiton with apoptygma slipping off right shoulder, and himation; her drapery floats behind her. (
4) Autumn looks downwards to her right; she wears a coif, chiton and himation; in left hand she holds up a basket of fruit, and in right she holds the fore-paws of a kid of which the head hangs down and the hind feet touch the ground.
Next, between columns, are the figures of (5) Spring and (6) Summer repeated.
